When the part your platform needs does not exist in any catalogue, our engineers sit down with yours — and design, qualify and manufacture it in Retford, then keep making it for as long as your platform is in service.
An Icon engineer — not a sales office — responds within two working days.
Most polymer components are chosen from a catalogue. On a certified platform, "almost fits" is a risk: a failed fire test, a leak path at altitude, a late delivery that stops a build line, a supplier that exits with twenty years of service life still to run.
Where the almost-fits part gives up
The sector expects up to three attempts per seal. Each failure is weeks of repeat testing while the engine programme waits.
A leak path, a weight penalty, or an in-service issue that surfaces on the aircraft instead of on the rig.
A late hose or duct stops a build as surely as a late engine — for a part that cost a fraction of anything around it.
A supplier exits or a compound is withdrawn. The part is obsolete, and the platform needs a redesign and a full requalification.
Small on the bill of materials. Enormous on the risk register. Discovered at qualification, it is a repeat test measured in weeks. Discovered in service, it is a redesign, a requalification, and a name on the programme review.
How we engineer it instead ↓
Each one is the output of an engineering programme: designed for one place on one platform, qualified to its standard, and manufactured for as long as that platform flies, drives or runs.
Flexiflo™ air-to-air refuelling hoses on NATO-standard tanker programmes, G-suit and oxygen supply hoses, and aerospace ducting with seals integrated into the duct to remove leak paths. DEF STAN 00-970, DEF STAN 05-123 and MIL-H-4495D.
Engine and pylon fire seals approved to AC 20-135, aerodynamic and airframe seals, FlexiSeal™ brake and landing-gear seals, custom rubber mouldings and hand fabrications — in Viton™, fluorosilicone, silicone, EPDM and compounds developed in-house.
Road wheels, rollers, track pads and bushes in ENDURANCE® compounds with I-PC bonding — engineered against heat build-up, abrasion and chip-and-chunk on tracked and armoured platforms.
Cavity-resonance, surface-wave and reticulated-foam absorbers that dissipate electromagnetic energy at source — supplied and supported from the UK.
If it isn't listed, it's because we haven't met your platform yet.
We know a seal is a fraction of your bill of materials — and all of your risk if it fails a fire test. We know what it is to explain a requirement, twice, to a sales office that has never seen a drawing.
So there is no sales office between you and our factory. Icon Aerospace Technology has engineered bespoke polymer components — aerospace seals, hoses, ducting, mouldings and running gear — on the same site in Retford for more than 150 years. Your enquiry goes to an engineer. Your design review happens with the people who will make the part. And when you want to see the rigs, the tooling and the shop floor, you are welcome to.
We call it face2face engineering. Complex requirements, engineered together.
Three steps, named so you can repeat them — and what you have in hand at the end of each one.
Send the specification, the envelope and the environment — or simply describe the problem. An Icon engineer responds within two working days with a first view on feasibility, materials and what it will take. In Retford, at your site, or on a call.
Design and FEA. Compound selection or development. 3D-printed tooling and samples in days, not months. Fire, thermal, pressure and environmental testing on rigs built to replicate your service conditions, then formal qualification and first-article inspection to AS9102.
Industrialised production and repeat supply for as long as the platform is in service — with full traceability, planned obsolescence, and an engineer who still picks up the phone in year twenty.
Tell us where the platform hurts. Every application below routes to the problems we solve there, the products that answer them, and the standards that apply.
Ducting and connectors that hold pressure and temperature across the ECS run — with seals integrated into the duct to remove leak paths.
ECS →Aerodynamic and airframe seals that survive cycling, weather and decades of service on civil and military airframes.
Airframe Sealing →Air-to-air refuelling hoses and fuel-system components qualified to DEF STAN and MIL standards.
Fuel & Refuelling →G-suit and oxygen supply hoses where the failure mode is not an option — life-support grade materials and testing.
Breathing & Oxygen →Brake and landing-gear seals engineered for heat, pressure and the hardest duty cycle on the aircraft.
Landing Gear & Braking →Engine and pylon fire seals approved to AC 20-135, and high-temperature components tested past 1,093 °C on rigs we designed.
Engine / High-Temp →Road wheels, track pads and bonded components in ENDURANCE® compounds that keep tracked and armoured fleets available.
Defence Vehicles →Each application page opens with the problems of that system, the products that answer them, and the standards that apply — with one case study each.
Programme. Fire testing is where qualification programmes stall — the sector plans for repeat attempts on every seal. Over an eight-year programme, we developed a formulation and construction that passed every one of its eleven qualification tests first time — at more than 1,093 °C, under vibration, airflow and pressure differentials, on rigs we designed ourselves.
In service. Those seals now protect engines, APUs and fuel systems in service today.
Every decision made without the material in the room gets more expensive downstream: at qualification it is a repeat test measured in weeks; in service it is a redesign, a requalification, and a name on the programme review.
Engage early and here is what you can expect — six commitments, each with an owner and a measure.
No central sales office, no ticket queue.
We never adapt a catalogue part and call it bespoke.
A straight answer on lead time and cost is part of the service.
Supported by a published on-time-delivery figure, reviewed annually.
Obsolescence is planned, not discovered.
Non-disclosure agreements on request. Export-control and data-handling wording exactly as quality and legal approve it.
